When a straight woman decides to “redeem” the gay narrative by making her main characters mainstream-hot, cisgendered, able-bodied guys, and “gives them” a happy ending, she is not making progress. She’s not even being subversive.

What I find awkward about a lot of female authors writing gay novels is that the gay MCs are often portrayed in a very uncomfortably stereotypical way, almost like that gay comic relief who is always over-the-top sassy or surrounded by female friends. But that brings me to my main question: why are so many readers and writers of gay romance women?

The answer simply comes down to cultural conditioning and statistics. Most readers are women, and they statistically read more romance than men. If any genre has more male readers, its crime and thrillers or comic books. Authors Z. A. Maxfield, Mary Calmes, Amy Lane, Anne Tenino, and Josephine Myles gave new insight into why women write gay romance fiction.

Amy began by saying that “love is redemptive” and if any group needs the redemptive qualities of love, it’s gay men. The gay themes – furtive glances in locker rooms, workplace rivalries overturned in shared hotel rooms – are not necessarily aimed at gay men. In fact, one survey has suggested that 87 per cent of MM romance readers are female. The written word is an incredibly powerful tool that can be used to foster understanding and healing.

Most of them died. There are tons of little homophobic things in gay romance. I think writing is a wonderful way to explore our inner world and learn things about ourselves. The more stories I write, the more interested I am in other ways of being human, under that colorful umbrella of all things queer. Hearing from gay male readers that I got it right — that they found the story both enjoyable and sexy — is a thrilling compliment.

I feel the same, there are some really amazing books written by women out there, but I also really want to support queer men more! Does the way the book is written give you the wrong vibes? Lots of great insight. Largely straight women? Sign me up. If the author is writing for women, and women are reading the books, then how can it be an authentic, accurate representation? It really does help a lot! Is she being weird to the couple?
